"The best gift I’ve given myself is the understanding that I’ll never be able to please everyone, and I’m not going to be liked by everyone."

1: What is your greatest fear, and how do you manage it?

In life and also as a business owner, the word “enough” comes up a lot for me because I was always raised very performance-based, with a perfectionist mindset. If something wasn’t crossed off or if it was done wrong, I worried that I wasn’t good enough. So when I started my business I had to learn to manage this fear by allowing myself grace, and allowing things to just be. Admittedly it took me a long time to get to this place in my life where I could just say, I did exactly what I was capable of doing today, and tomorrow is a new day. I’d say the pivotal point for me was back in 2022, a year after opening the first studio, while we were preparing to open the second studio. I made a deal with my husband that this time we were going to make this fun and not all about the grind. This time I would check myself and give myself the grace I needed throughout the process, and I did.

2: How do you define success?

Success for me was originally tied to my perfectionism - it was all about winning. It wasn’t until that life transition while opening the second studio that I was able to decouple winning and success, to redefine success as finding harmony and a work-life balance. Success for me today is when the business is good, my life is good, and I’m able to spend quality time with the people who are important to me. I guess you could say success for me was also departing from my perfectionist thinking. One of the best compliments I’ve received lately from my team was “You seem really calm these days”. It feels really fulfilling to be present in my life and in my business in the way that I am today.

3: Who are your real-life heroes?

For me, it’s my support system - especially my family and my husband. My parents are actually here visiting me now, and the funny thing is, my dad is currently outside spraying my weeds for me. Their support has never ceased or wavered. And you know, when I think about a hero, I think about someone who goes to battle with you, and for me, that person has been my husband. This goes right back to the enoughness I struggled with because I met my husband around the time of COVID and he was the one who really pushed me to go for it - to open my studio concept. I never really saw that capability in myself to scale my garage and local gym training into something on a grander scale. He believed in me and challenged me to go big, which helped push me to see my own potential.

4: What is the best gift you've given yourself?

The best gift I’ve given myself is the understanding that I’ll never be able to please everyone, and that I’m not going to be liked by everyone. I struggled with people-pleasing behavior in the past - in my training, and especially when it came to writing programs. I worked myself to death trying to please everyone. And the transition wasn’t easy. It took a lot of self-discovery, especially in the self-love department. It took actually believing in myself and believing I was enough. A big part of why I opened my studio was to empower other women to do and feel the same. I feel like when women come together and there's that vulnerability aspect, the walls begin to drop, and it allows us to get comfortable with ourselves, our community, and the people around us. I truly enjoy helping other women find self-love. It’s a beautiful thing to be a part of.

5: What was the last win you celebrated?

The last win I celebrated was the new studio opening because it was such a process, and work can force me to put myself on the back burner at times. Going back to the deal I made with my husband that for this second studio opening, I wasn’t going to lose sight of the fun in the process was in part celebrating what we’ve achieved. When you’re a business owner sometimes you miss important moments. We didn’t get to celebrate our anniversary, or Valentine’s Day this year so we agreed that once the studio opened we would wrap it all up into one trip to Mexico. As a business owner, it’s easy to get consumed by the next task and the next goal, but I’ve been working on slowing down and really appreciating how far we’ve come.
