Happy Birthday to us! We can’t believe it’s been a year–and what a year it’s been. While things look a little bit different than we may have expected when we first took a leap of faith and started At Present (we have a team spread across the country thanks to Zoom and we’re still getting used to wearing real pants again for starters), we have so much to celebrate–and we feel so lucky that we’re in the business of doing so with diamonds and gemstones.
To celebrate our first birthday, we decided it was time for you to get to know the faces of At Present–the founders, Marc and Monica. And just like any parents at their child’s first birthday, please forgive them if they wax poetic or get a little nostalgic–after all, it’s their baby’s birthday!
A Note from Marc & Monica, At Present’s First Birthday
At Present is the product of our personal journeys. It is a reflection of where we are now and an intention for where we are going.
Marc is a fifth-generation jeweler. He loves jewelry–not only how it looks and how it feels, but who made it, where it comes from, and what it means when you make it part of your life. He traveled the world working with the designers and artisans whose passion brings jewelry to life. He was frustrated by how few people got to see the most exciting pieces and how hard it was for independent designers to build businesses.
Monica spent five years working in design, helping great artists build sustainable companies. While she could wax poetic on the beauty of blown glass chandeliers or avian taxidermy, Marc likes to joke that when they met, the most valuable piece of jewelry she owned was her nose ring. She didn’t understand why most jewelry was bought by men and given to women at round-number birthdays and anniversaries. She really didn’t get why occasion-based jewelry was so boring.
We started At Present to bring together jewelry and people that inspire us in an effort to celebrate our journeys and being here now.
Over the last year, we’ve had the honor of partnering with some of the most talented and inspiring jewelry designers. We’re so happy we’ve been able to share their work with a larger audience, and to help people find amazing, cool, unique jewelry to mark the moments in their life that are the most meaningful.
We sold matching Pamela Zamore gold medal pendants to a mother and her two daughters to celebrate surviving 2020, Yu Mono diamond ear claws to liven up daily Zoom meetings, and a suite of Objet-a pieces to wear to a long-postponed 40th birthday party. Monica even bought Mandy Reid necklaces for herself and her daughter Indigo to celebrate Mother’s Day, growth, and lifelong learning. Anything but boring.
The At Present journey is just beginning. We’re so glad you’re along for the ride.
We can’t wait to continue sharing extraordinary creativity, introducing inspiring people, and helping you mark this moment–right here, right now–in your personal journeys.
Cheers to you. Cheers to now.
At Present and Always,
Marc and Monica
